Syracuse University William E. Sanford & Family Rowing Performance Center

Client: Syracuse University Crew (Jack Porter
Deliverables: William E. Sanford & Family Rowing Performance Centers
Summary: As part of a major renovation at the Barnes Center at the Arch at Syracuse University, the varsity crew tank room received a major upgrade. This historic space has served the rowing teams for more than a century. While the space was the first of its kind in 1909, it had become known as a dungeon. To quote the former coach the facility is now named after, "When I was coaching here, this place was like a toilet... If I went down to New York City and went down to one of those subway men’s rooms. That’s what this thing looked like almost. It was very dark, dismal, but now it’s so bright and beautiful.” The facility now boasts strong SU branding, letter winners, Olympians, and awards recognition. With harsh NY winters, the space provides the teams with a welcoming, modern, and professional space to train in all year-long. It is a recruiting tool, to draw the next century of world-class athletes, and a place to honor those who have come before them.
